Less Than 1.5s: Baidu’s Latest Requirement for Load Time of Home Pages

Baidu’s curve for page load time and abandon rate

Recently, Baidu’s WeChat Account specially excerpted some paragraphs from its August white paper on “user experience of landing pages for mobile search” and stressed that the home pages of mobile sites should be loaded within 1.5 seconds.

Baidu explained that this is because, in the era of Mobile Internet, visitors have higher expectations of loading speed for websites on their mobile devices. The longer a page takes to access, the more likely a potential visitor would give up on the website.

Baidu even launched a special algorithm – Thunder Algorithm (as listed in “Baidu’s algorithm updates till March 2018), to help promote the authority of mobile websites which could be loaded within 2 seconds.

Before, Baidu has long ago claimed that “one second” would be an ideal load time for any webpages.

It’s weird that some oversea website owners don’t seem to care about the load time of their Chinese pages, they would expect an SEO agency to make their pages ranking on the 1st pages of Baidu by simply using blackhat SEO tactics. But personally I never saw any slow websites on the 1st pages of Baidu.
